Happy Summer! Since my last few blog posts a lot has changed, around the world and with Giftkids! During the course of my gap year I have been thinking about how best to grow Giftkids in a way which continues to be meaningful as I head off to college. As I started looking back on the scholarship I was fortunate to receive for school, I reflected on how great it was to have some of my own money which I could put towards my school expenses. This got me thinking- that perhaps scholarships to those who really need the money for college would be a meaningful commitment for Giftkids to make - I am thrilled to introduce the Giftkids Scholarship!
The Giftkids Scholarship is awarded to two students of outstanding character and promise from James Lick High School in San Jose, CA. who have demonstrated academic success against the face of hardship and epitomize the value of hard work. Each year, the scholarship would grant $1,000 to two graduating seniors who have been accepted and will be attending a 4-yr college. The funds can be used at the discretion of the student towards college finances such as putting down the deposit to secure the admission spot or dorm essentials.
For the 2021-22 school year, we were delighted to award the scholarship to two deserving and wonderful JLHS seniors. As this scholarship continues in the coming years I hope to share where our recipients will attend college and what they are interested in studying - I can’t wait to see how this scholarship can smooth the path to college in a small but hopefully meaningful way for our recipients.
Also, we continue to support the children of Haiti with the mid-day meal before school. Due to COVID, they are still unable to take their educational trip to the mainland.
