As I step outside the car, I am surrounded by kids ages 6-14, dressed in their finest clothes to greet me. The director of the orphanage stands in the corner, smiling knowingly. My parents watch silently and I can tell that my 11 yr old brother is contemplating bolting from the scene. It takes me a few seconds to take in this unexpected yet wholly joyful welcome - and then I hug the kids as they introduce themselves. I think to myself, “I know these names, I know these kids.” =)
This past December, I had the opportunity to visit the Belaku orphanage in Bidar; I spent the day engaging with the children that we had been connecting with via letters and gifts for the past two years. The energy was electric. We had an amazing time laughing, dancing, and singing, as the children embraced me as if we had been friends for a long time!
This was such an amazing and joyful experience to be able to connect with the children at the Belaku Home, thank you to all of you who have shown support for Giftkids, I can’t wait for what’s next!
Below are some pictures and a video :)
Love,
Riya
